I did a little piece on a scent i am obsessed with this time of year. BEACH/SAND/SEA & COCONUT. Seriously. I want to smell like this all the time. And I can- even without leaving my apartment. So can you! Check it out!

The Scent of the Sea by Jessika Goranson
Posted by webeditors at 11:57 am

Every year about this time after I have transferred all my spring/summer clothing to my closet (goodbye leggings!) I also like to switch up my perfume. Fall and winter usually means I’m wearing my staple Chanel No. 5, but warm days call for something entirely different. My absolute favorite smell out there is old school Coppertone suntan lotion. It reminds me of being a kid at the ocean in Islesboro, Maine with my entire family. Lucky for me (and anyone that shares the love of smelling like you’ve been playing in the golden sand all day) there are 3 very good scents on the market that totally bring me back.

Perhaps the most nostalgic and PERFECT concoction comes from CB I Hate Perfume At The Beach 1966 ($80). “The prime note in this scent is Coppertone 1967 with a new accord created especially for the perfume-North Atlantic. The base of the scent contains a bit of Wet Sand, Seashell, Driftwood and just a hint of Boardwalk. The effect when you wear At The Beach 1966 is as if you’ve been swimming all day in the ocean.”

Second on my list is Bobbi Brown’s Beach ($108.99). “Designed with a lightly intoxicating blend of sand jasmine, sea spray, and mandarin, Beach captures the atmosphere of summer.”

Coming in a close third is Fire Island by Bond No. 9 ($160). “Fire Island is an experimental scent- the beach equivalent of Proust’s madeleine dunked in tea. In this case, the memories conjured up are the sights, the touch, the smell of soaking up the sun the old-fashioned way- lying naked, or close to it, on the beach”.

If you’re lucky enough to hit the beach this long weekend (slathered in SPF 1,000) I’m jealous. But if you’re just kicking around the city dreaming of crashing waves- like me- you now know how to fake that “I’ve been on holiday” scent. It works every time.

her hair and make-up never pisses me off either. some celebs completely RUIN the moment this way. i love how soft and becoming she looks here. i also like the dress and i think the chiffon-y flower brooches are wonderful. (i would normally not go for the feathers on the dress- but she is on a red carpet in the flipping south of france). a totally appropriate place for some subtle white feathers.

...happened yesterday with the o-so stylish/clever/genius/professional/creative/ TASTE MAKER, Eddie Ross. one of Eddie's supreme talents is sourcing old stuff and making it look like a million, trillion bucks. he's done it for Martha Stewart (in an awesomely ad nauseam way), every design magazine i can think of (and not just styling for styling(s) sake- his own homes are featured regularly) and was even a finalist on Bravo's Top Design. he has a TRUNK FULL of other accolades- but my favorite thing he did lately? he asked (little ole me) to lunch when i met him at his "Treasures" trunk show hosted by Deborah Buck a few days ago. (someone else i was so HAPPY to finally meet.)

i basically had the kind of day that i (sigh) dreamed i would encounter, say, every other day while living in nyc. the fun started with a chipper text from him at 7:30 a.m. telling me where to meet at 1:00. (darling French bistro. natch)

and then the following...

1. a 2 hour lunch with someone i find uber inspiring- AND realizing i actually really dig the person.

2. cracking up and non-stop talking (so much so that i can't even order food for an hour) musing over the MANY stylish ways to use a pretty silver punch bowl. or a tray. or a toast rack.

3. drinking wine in the afternoon

4. then heading to the 7th floor of Bergdorf's so he can pick out a few things for House Beautiful's "Kitchen of the Month" shoot. (um. loved. it.)

5. best part about Bergdorf's? we played "guess how much?" in the Kelly Wearstler boutique. normally i was off by a few couple GRAND. basically "guess how much?" happened all throughout the 7th floor of heaven. (he actually picked out some gorgeous, very practically priced dishes and these mad-cute cutting boards that looked like oars). i guess we'll have to wait for the magazine to see what he does with them.

6. feeling fancy and ordering cappuccino and cookies in Berdorf's restaurant (also designed by Kelly Wearstler).

7. me getting a lesson on taking pictures of cappuccino and cookies with iPhone- then using instagram. (seriously. i need an iPhone. this is stupid.)

i can't wait for round 2.

check out his website/blog (so many beautiful ideas) and in the meantime ENJOY these photos below...

once i have a CAMERA again- i mean iPHONE- i will post what i bought at his show at Buck House. (think brass/bronze and awesome). he's having a similiar show (all personally collected items) NOW with One Kings Lane!

"that's Ben Stiller" i heard someone say.

i squinted to only see a dark haired man with blood (fake) on his face doing something really "active" looking (and dangerous) on top of some moving contraption.

i got closer... and... yes indeed! Ben Stiller! cool. i politely moved into the crowd (the only way out) and the contraption he was on (psyched that i was close enough to throw a zoolander face his way) rolled by. a few seconds later production assistants were yelling "move it people! get out of the streets-- this is a movie set!"

FINE! I'm TRYING to! GEEZ. so that was that. i love seeing the occasional famous face. who doesn't?

FAST FORWARD to a few hours ago... i'm at the JACK WHITE concert with my sister ANGE, Holiday's awesome ROBIN and her super cool college bff ROSA. ALL huge Jack White fans. me? i know one song-- but happy to be there. the venue is PACKED and i immediately feel bummed that there is little way to actually see the stage (open seating situation). i don't know about you- but i am a fiend for a good view. ugh. we made our way to a (pathetic) spot (ridicuously tall people. elbow jabbing. zero view of the stage) but then all raised our glass to say cheers! this is super fun! that's when i notice a really really nice looking balcony with tables and space and a VIEW. it looked soooooooooo good.

so yes. i patiently stood by the v.i.p. rope (watching all the popular kids breeze up with their coveted hot pink wristband) until the attendant gave me his ear. it was LOUD so i yelled (politely) "i was wondering if my 3 friends and i could watch the show from upstairs?" he paused, gave me a look (i tried to give him "i'm cool" eyes back) and then he said, "ok. just 3."

that was easy! i did a little touchdown dance and ran. everyone had a giddy look on their face and as we made our way up.the.stairs. i yelled over the music, "i just asked!!!"

so to end my story-- our new perch was gloriously spacious, the view of Jack White (i love him now) doing his thing was virtually unobstructed, we had a private bar and zero line for the bathroom-- and Ben Stiller and his wife were grooving right next to me. so was Kristin Wiig. i think. i mean i SWEAR it was her.

 it was TOTALLY her.

like, i'm serious.

i'm not even kidding.

good old hill

i miss you!
